Barbells for Boobs – Fundraiser

On October 30th I will be participating in a fundraiser called “Barbells for Boobs” to raise money for Mammograms in Action at my CrossFit gym.

Mammograms In Action‘s mission is to provide funding for qualified women who need screening and/or diagnostic procedures in the prevention of breast cancer. By supporting MIA you help low-income and uninsured women.

The fundraiser event itself is named Amazing Grace because the main workout is known as “Grace.” The workout is 30 clean and jerks for time. I’ve embedded a youtube video of one of the best performances I’ve seen of Grace performed.

If you are interested in sponsoring me in the fundraiser, get in touch. I don’t know what the easiest method of collecting donations would be, but I’m sure we can work something out.

Counting down to Amazing Grace 2010

Looking forward to December

I’ve been meaning to write up a blog post for a few weeks now, and I just couldn’t seem to find the time. The idea behind my post was that I realized that a few things are all going to be happening in the month of December and I’ve started to really look forward to it.

The first big thing is that I will be graduating from business school. In some ways it feels like I just started, but it’s been a pretty intense journey. Taking double courses the entire way thru, and finishing in roughly 15 months, all while still working full time hasn’t been easy. It will be nice to fully reclaim my weeknights and occasional saturday for matters other than school.

Secondly, this will be the first December that Stacy and I get to go home to our families during the holidays. Since we moved out to California, she always had to work during the holiday season, but since she is now independently employed, we have the freedom to go back home. It will be great to spend Christmas with the family again.

Thirdly, December is my birthday month, so I’m always looking forward to that. But this year might be interesting if Jawk’s idea to go to Vegas works out.

And overall, I just think December will be a good time to look back at accomplishments, enjoy time with friends and family, and then start to look forward to the coming year.

On Emergency Preparedness…

This post is courtesy of guest author Cheryl Eng.  Cheryl is a co-worker of mine and believes strongly in being prepared for emergency situations.  She recently completed the NERT training and certification process and is here to share her learnings with our readers.  Cheryl is a USC alumni and graduated from the University of Chicago MBA program in 2008.  Feel free to ask any questions in the comments.

In the wake of the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile and the threat of the tsunami in Hawaii we have been confronted with the devastation of natural disasters.   While it is impossible to accurately predict the date and time of the next earthquake we can all take action to prepare.  Being prepared does not mitigate all of the risks of an earthquake but it can certainly improve our chances of survival and reduce the potential damage that an earthquake can create.   For those of us who live in the Bay Area, here are some concerning statistics:

  • 8: faults in the Bay Area capable of producing an earthquake with a 6.7 or higher magnitude
  • 99.7%: chance that an earthquake with a magnitude greater than 6.7 will occur before 2040
  • <10%: householders that have disaster plans
  • <50%: households that have disaster supply kits

What’s coming down the pike? A guest post.

I have been incredibly busy the last few weeks and haven’t had time to write anything new. But the good news is a very talented co-worker has written a post for PerfectMike.com that she thinks (and I agree) will be very valuable to our readership. I don’t want to give too much of it away, but it’s the kind of article that you will learn a lot from, and hopefully be able to apply it if and when you need to.

If all goes well, this post will be up later this week or this weekend.

It’s been a very rough/busy few weeks…

The past few weeks I have been completely swamped with the end of another session of business school, sending out all of the auctions, and work being, well, work. Maybe I’ll elaborate on that some day. Anyways, I have a few blog posts that I would like to write this week and next as I ease into the next session of classes. This session will be another double session for me, as I will be taking:

  • BUS 270: Financial management
  • BUS 260: Decision making analysis

I don’t want to jynx anything, but I think 260 should be fairly easy for me, since it is basically what I do for a living. Until next time, stay well.

Charity auctions are over….

Well, I have to be honest. I was disappointed with the way that my T-shirt and sweatshirt auctions went. Quite a few of the shirts didn’t even sell for the 99 cents that I started them at, and a few of them sold for exactly 99 cents.

Even with the incentive that the auctions were being held in the name of charity, it just didn’t spark much interest. So I have decided to err on the side of generosity. I am going to donate all of the shipping and handling money that was paid as well, to help increase what the SFSPCA will be receiving this month. So since my PayPal account was empty at the beginning of these auctions, it looks like the donation will be roughly $335.

That said, I think this is a pretty nice sized donation to make. But seeing that number and knowing that how little some of the shirts sold for, it would have been nice to raise up closer to $500.
