Weekend tip: See hidden files in Finder in Snow Leopard

Read all about it here: Finer Things in Mac

In Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6+), if you need to open a hidden file, all you need to do is type Cmd-Shift-. (that’s a period) in the standard Open File dialog. All hidden files will be displayed.

This is a toggle, so typing the shortcut a second time will hide the hidden files again.

This site is all about finding the somewhat subtle things about OS X that make it great. If you haven’t gotten snow leopard yet, what are you waiting for?

Four years later: eBay sells Skype for the same price it paid for it

I wrote about eBay in May 2008, and talked about how the company had a lot of issues, specifically with their direction. I mentioned Skype in particular and how much they paid for it, which can also be found in their press release here. Today they announced that they are selling it, and lucky for them getting back what they paid for it, and even keeping at 35% stake in the company.

What is strange is that Jim Goldman on CNBC said they paid “over 1 billion dollars” for Skype. Not sure where he came up with that number.

From an investor standpoint, NOT TECHNOLOGY standpoint, Skype can be looked at as the great-grand daddy of Twitter. It has a ton of potential, a large and growing customer base, but how do you make money with it?

What is clear from this move is that eBay’s vision of Skype never came to fruition and probably never could. Their visions of a grand open market place where a buyer could video chat with a seller with a single click, just isn’t in the cards. It would do wonders for their trust levels, but it just isn’t in the cards.

If I were still an eBay investor, I’d be content to know that the Skype acquisition didn’t turn out to be a big negative, and hopefully the company can re-focus on its core business. Four years of holding onto a company, and dumping it for what you paid for it is a decent situation in these times we are in.

Snow Leopard: So far, so good

So Snow Leopard came out on Friday, a few weeks earlier than most people probably expected it. I’ve been using it for a few months, and have to say it’s really solid. It’s got a faster response time to applications, it has some new features that I’ve found really useful, and it’s hard to beat the price of $29. Continue Reading

Tracking bike rides part 2 – RunKeeper

When we went out and got bikes, I found the mapmyride application useful, but after conversing with some co-workers, I think that I will be using RunKeeper going forward. There was some level of fate involved in the decision. MapMyRide requires internet connection for the recording to begin, and the bike shop in Los Altos is in a dead zone, so when we started our ride, I couldn’t record it. I gave Run Keeper a shot, and it started right up.

The advantages don’t stop there though. The runkeeper.com web site is a much nicer presentation of your riding data, with speed and elevation as well as the route presented to you on a google map. There is a free and pay version from the App Store, but I am using the free version right now.

I just want to listen to Howard Stern.

I just want to listen to Howard Stern. I still remember my first experience with Howard. I was 13 years old and I was out in a glorified row boat with 2 cousins fishing for Stripers in Long Island sound, when one of them said we had to go in and watch some TV show. I just wanted to fish, but he was talking about how the show has girls with huge breasts advertising Snapple iced tea. Now my head was spinning. I just didn’t understand how these women had anything to do with Snapple, or this guy, but I didn’t have much say in the matter since my cousins were older than me and we were already heading home. That night I watched my first episode of what most Stern fans refer to as “The Channel 9 show,” and I still remember the exact episode. It was the bowling alley episode where grandpa Munster was up against Young MC.
